Maths – Raglan Primary School

Maths

This half term we will be focusing on number and place value. Below are some of the objectives that we will be covering:

  • representing numbers up to 1000 using concrete and pictorial representations.
  • comparing objects upto 1000
  • comparing pictures upto 1000
  • finding 1, 10, 100 more or less than a given number
  • ordering numbers
  • counting in 50's

Place value provides the basis for our understanding of number and underpins many of the other skills that we will cover this year in maths.  Please find the year 3 maths overview (at the bottom of this page) which outlines the maths topics that will be covered throughout the year.

Escape from Pompeii : Balit, Christina: Amazon.co.uk: Books

English

Our first text of year 3 will be Escape from Pompeii by Christina Balit. This is a great book to start Year 3 with as it links with our history topic of the Romans. We will start by practising our sentence types and punctuation writing all about The Romans. Over the next 6 weeks we will be diving into this amazing book and developing on our existing writing skills as well as developing new ones. Below are the targets that we will be on in this book.

  • Use inverted commas to punctuate direct speech
  • Using the present perfect form of verbs in contrast to past tense
  • Grouping related ideas into paragraphs.

Reading

If your child is on the Read Write Inc reading scheme they will be continuing with the programme from where they were assessed in the summer term. They will contiue to have daily phonics in the morning, bringing home books every third day and also books of their choice. We have a new online reading login to record our daily reads called GoRead. Children will also take part in a whole class shared read in the afternoons to ensure that they are exposed to quality year 3 texts.

Science

Our topic for the autumn half term is 'Animals including Humans'.

In this topic we will be learning all about healthy eating. We will look at the eatwell plate and discuss what the 5 food groups are and what we need to do to stay healthy.

We will also be comparing vertebrates and invertebrates, trying to find similarities and differences and exploring how they move.

At the end of our topic we will look at the human skeleton and explore how muscles and joints enable us to move.

Throughout the whole topic we will be planning and completing investigations, making predictions, asking and answering questions and collecting results.

PE

For this half term, our PE day is a FRIDAY and our focus will be netball.

Remember, on your PE day, you should come to school wearing your PE kit for the entire day. As our PE sessions will be outside, we recommend that you wear a suitable outdoor PE kit.

History

This half term we will be learning all about the Romans.

This links well with our English text 'Escape from Pompeii' providing us with opportunities for extended writing pieces. We will also be learning about that period in History through role play, art, DT, geography and ICT. At the end of the topic we are hoping to invite other classes into our Roman Museum where we will be guides and share the knowledge and information that we have found during our topic.
