Welcome to Year 1!

Spring Term 1

Welcome back Plum! I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas, I am really looking forward to another fun half term with you all.

This half-term, we are basing our writing around 'The Lion Inside' by Rachel Bright.

During this half term the children will  focusing on our Year 1 mastery keys. Children will be mastering the use of punctuation including capital letters, full stops and question marks. Using and to join words and clauses, using the prefix un- and adding suffixes!

Our Science topic this term is Plants! Year 1 will be learning about the structure of plants and trees and what they need to grow well. Children engage in a variety of activities including identifying common plants and trees in the garden and in the wild, sorting deciduous and evergreen leaves, and crafting labelled plant collage pictures. Children will plant their own bean and observe it closely over the coming weeks by measuring and recording its growth!

During P.E this term we will be learning gymanastics and yoga. P.E kits should be in schooleveryday and include a white t-shirt, shorts and pumps. As the weather is getting colder, you may chose to include a P.E jumper, jogging bottoms and trainers.

Sharing books with your child and listening to them read regularly at home is essential to develop their reading skills. Ideally, this should be 10 minutes reading at home everyday. We continue to listen to the children as much as possible in class. All children participate in whole class reading sessions.

We have a whole school reward of frequent reader books. These are awarded to the children in assemblies.

Please remember your child will need to bring in their reading book and Reading Record to school each day.

Homework is not compulsary, but it will help your child's learning and progress.

Spellings go out at the start of the week and are tested on a Friday.

Water Bottles:

Please can you make sure that your child has a named water bottle in school with them everyday. As we are a healthy school we ask that it is water and not juice that your children bring in their water bottles.

Everyday your child takes part in a fun phonics session. We teach phonics daily as it teaches children to read accurately and fluently with good comprehension. In the session they learn to form each letter, spell correctly, and compose their ideas step-by-step.

Thank you for taking the time to have a look at Plum class' page. If you ever need to speak to any member of our team, please contact the school where we can organise a meeting or a discussion.
