Key Stage 1 - Bumble Bees (Year 2) 2020 - 2021

Miss Evans

Mrs Elliott

Welcome to the Bumblebee class page!

Welcome  Bumblebess!

Mrs Elliott and I are SO excited to be working with you all this year! We can't wait to get started. We are looking forward to helping you learn something new everyday so below I have included some information about what we will be learning about in Year 2 during Autumn 1.

Spellings will be given out every Monday via the Class Dojo page. Please practice these at home as children will be tested on these during Friday morning.

Reading at home should take place at least 3 times a week. Bookbag books will be changed once a week and paper books every three days. (This is usually a Wednesday and Monday) If your child reads 3 times during 1 week, they will recieved a stamp on their Frequent Reader Worm. When this is full, they will recieve a free book from school!

As well as this, Times Tables should be practied at home weekly. I have included some links below to support this. Homework will go out on a Thursday via Class Dojo and this should be completed and submitted through the Class Dojo page. If your child completes the homework, they will recieve a Dojo!

In maths, we will firstly be focusing on measure. There will be lots of practical learning opportunties and investigates. I can't wait!

In additon please practise number bonds to 10, 20 and 100.

Times Tables

Year 2 is where the children begin to learn times tables. By the end of the year the children are expected to learn their 2s, 5s and 10 times tables.

Below I have included some handy websites to support you when practicing your times tables...

Our first text in English is going to be 'Toys in Space' by Mini Grey. This lis an amazing book and it's going to help us produce some fantastic pieces of writing!

We will be consolidating lots of skills taught in year 1 to build our cofidnece.

Have a you know what an adjective, is? Can you use a capital letter and a full stop? Can you remember how to use ? and !  Can you use the suffixes ed, er, est and ing? Don't worry if not! We will be learning all about this in our English lessons.

Our first topic in science will be Humans including animals! We are going to be classifying animals, learning about animal diets and learning lots of facts about different animals.

Do you know anything about animals already?

Please find a copy of the knowledge organiser on our dojo page.

Week 14 of Home Learning

To practise these you could use rainbow writing, or write them in a pyramid, practise them in a sentence or find them in your reading books.

Reading and Phonics

Please read your child's Read Write Inc books daily with your child as this will support progress in reading and phoics and build your child's confidence. Within the text there are tricky words, speedy words and comprehension questions too.

We try and encourage our children to read for pleasure and have a passion for reading as it will stimulate their brain, grown their vocabulary and stregthen their reading ability.

Each half term in Bumblebee class I recommend 5 reads and encourage the children to try and read all 5 by the end of the half term. If they achive this then they'll be awarded with a certificate and a prize.

These texts are texts that adults or older sibblings could read and model good fluency and expression. You could also discuss new vocabualry and ask questions about the text.

This link is the top 100 reads in year 2. Have a look and visit your local library to explore the stories

Reading websites: Great free resource with activities to support learning. another great reading resource with ideas.
